Handprints

Our friend Kelly Alvey, whom we met at last year's Joni and Friends family camp, is one of those gifted people who receives artistic inspiration in the midst of ordinary life. She was driving to work, grimacing at the children's handprints all over the inside of her car's windshield, when she thought about the bloodstained hands of Jesus. (I know. I would not have thought of that either. I would have reached for a paper towel and missed the inspiration entirely.) Kelly thought about it the rest of the morning. What does it mean to view life through those handprints? How might we see past or push aside the distraction of lesser loves? Using some paint, newspaper clippings, and the hands of her autistic child, Kelly tried to portray the idea visually. She hung it in her kitchen window, where it daily reminds this busy mom about priorities, sacrifice, and grace.
