Walking to the Sky

I drive past the Nasher Sculpture Center almost every morning, and I always turn to catch a glimpse of Jonathan Borofsky's "Walking to the Sky." It is whimsical and inviting even from a distance, but even more so while standing at the sculpture's base. From that vantage point, it feels as though we are all walking in single file. It is my turn to step up on the pole.

Where are we going? I do not see this as a stairway to heaven, let alone a more artistic version of the old "rapture in Dallas" painting. We are not being caught up with Jesus, and there are no catastrophies left behind. We are choosing to step upward and outward. Away from here. Toward breathing space.
